Gordon Paper Co. acquired trademarks for the Peachtreat and Gardenia Butcher papers from International Paper Co.  IP will continue to manufacture both Peachtreat & Gardenia, but the papers will now be available exclusively through Gordon Paper.

AUGUST Dade Paper Co., Miami, FL, announced the signing of an agreement for the assets of G. Gonzales Wholesale Inc., Miami, FL.
Bunzl plc (parent co. of Bunzl Distribution, St. Louis, MO) announced it entered into an agreement with British Polythene Industries PLC to purchase its United Kingdom bag supply business.
Bunzl Distribution announced it is expanding its Canadian operations with the acquisition of Godin, a distributor of packaging and maintenance supplies to supermarkets, food processors and industrial companies, based in Quebec.
Georgia-Pacific Corp. and privately held Gulf State Paper Corp. have agreed to dissolve their joint venture for the sale and marketing of solid bleached sulphate (SBS) paperboard.
Inland Paperboard and Packaging, Inc. was acquired from Chesapeake Corp. on May 18, 2001 and changed its name to InPeake Packaging, Inc. (formerly called Chesapeake Packaging Co. and Capitol Packaging Corp.).
SEPTEMBER Gould Paper Corp and WWF Paper Corp reached an agreement on their joint venture.  The name of the new company will be Global Forest Group LLC.  The new venture is expected to close before the end of the third quarter.
Sonoco, a global packaging company, signed a definitive agreement to purchase US Paper Mills Corp.
OCTOBER The Mead Corp and Westvaco Corp agree to $10 billion merger, creating a global company with leading positions in packaging, coated and specialty papers, consumer and office products, and specialty chemicals.  The new company will be called MeadWestvaco Corp. The companies expect to close the transaction fourth quarter 2001.
Hudson Valley Paper Co. and Plymouth Paper Co. have entered into agreement in which Plymouth will operate as a division of Hudson Valley at its current location in Massachusetts.  The Plymouth name will be retained.
American Tissue Inc. and its domestic subsidiaries, have filed for Chapter 11 protection.
NOVEMBER Fox River Paper has announced it will acquire Mead Corp’s Gilbert Paper Co.  Fox River Paper will produce and sell all of the Gilbert Paper Co products as part of a separate branding strategy.  Mead will have 20% interest in the combined company.  The acquisition is expected to be complete by end of this month.
Clark National Inc. has acquired certain assets of Flesch’s Paper Serv., Inc. effective Sept. 25, 2001. Flesch’s operates as an ind. paper merchant specializing in foodservice disposables for the Minneapolis-St.Paul marketplace.
Temple-Inland Inc. and Gaylord Container Corp. have signed a definitive merger agreement in which Temple will acquire Gaylord. Total consideration for agreement is approx $786 million.
DECEMBER Employees of Appelton Papers Inc. have purchased all of the stock of the specialty coated paper product manufacturer from its European parent.  Transaction is valued at $810 million, making it one of the largest employee buyouts in US corporate history.
Spinnaker Industries, Inc. announces it has commenced voluntary proceedings under Chapter 11 to facilitate its financial reconstruction.

Mafcote Inc.’s merger of two of its divisions, Miami Valley Paper Co. and Wabash Paper Co., has created a new coating and converting business unit called Miami Wabash Paper LLC.  The two will continue to operate in separate locations, but will now offer a larger variety of fine coated specialty papers.
