International Paper completed its purchase of a majority interest in OAO Svetogorsk, a Russian-based pulp and paper business.
Tenneco Packaging and Sentinel Products Corp. have formed a global joint venture to be called Sentinel Polyolefins L.L.C., owned equally by both companies.
Kel-San, Inc. purchased Industrial Paper & Packaging Corp. effective February 5, 1999.
MARCH Belgravia Paper Co. has completed the acquisition of Simpson Pasadena Paper Co.’s San Jacinto Mill in Pasadena, TX.  The new company is named Pasadena Paper Co.
American Tissue Corp. bought the paper bag converting line of the Viking Bag Div. of Shurfine International, Inc., Pine Bluff, AR.

APRIL/MAY

Inland Eastex established a converter/distributor relationship with Lakeland Paper Co., Sturgis, MI.
UGI Corporation and Unisource Worldwide, Inc. have announced their boards of directors have approved a definitive agreement for a stock-for-stock transaction.  The transaction combines two national distributors to create one. Through its majority-owned subsidiary, AmeriGas Partners, L.P., UGI is the nation’s largest retail propane marketer.  The combined company will operate in four core distribution businesses:  propane, printing and imaging paper, packaging, and maintenance supplies.  The companies anticipate the transaction will be completed by the end of June 1999.
JUNE Georgia-Pacific Corp. and Unisource Worldwide, Inc. jointly announced each company’s BOD approved a definitive merger agreement under which G-P will acquire all outstanding shares of Unisource.
A W Mendenhall acquired the REDEX Redistribution Division of Nyco Chemical of Chicago, IL.
Caraustar Industries, Inc. and Temple-Inland, Inc. agreed to form a new company, Premier Boxboard Limited (PBL) LLC.
JULY Henley Corp. (Greensboro, NC) announced it is being acquired by Atlantic Corp. of Wilmington (operates throughout the Carolinas as Atlantic Packaging).
Industrial Packaging Corp. purchased the assets of Stretchtec Packaging & Supply Co.  The acquisition applies only to consumer accounts and none of the redistribution businesses.
AUGUST Rubbermaid Commercial Products LLC & Johnson Professional Co., Ltd. (Japan) announced strategic alliance for sales into the Japanese market.
Agrement reached for Weyerhaeuser Company to acquire MacMillan Bloedel Ltd. in stock transaction valued approx. $2.45 billion.

U.S. Foodservice, Greensburg PA, announced that it has entered into a letter of intent to acquire Parkway Pennsylvania.
Sonoco signed a definitive agreement to purchase the flexible packaging division of Graphic Packaging Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of ACX Technologies, Inc. (Golden, CO).
OCTOBER PaperExchange.com (Boston, MA) acquired MPX, Inc.
Georgia-Pacific Corp. and Chesapeake Corp. signed letter of intent to combine G-P’s litho-laminating packaging business in a new joint venture.  Closing is anticipated by the end of the fourth quarter 1999.

Peerless Paper Mills, Inc., announced its acquisition of Twincorp Master Distributor, Inc.
Mead Corp. announced plans to divest its 50% ownership in Northwood Inc. (Prince George, BC).  Canfor Corp. signed agreement to acquire Northwood from Mead and the joint venture’s other owner, Nexfor Inc.
NOVEMBER National Paper & Packaging, Cleveland, OH, has been acquired by Supplyone of Malvern PA.
WWF Paper Corp. announced the sales of its Southeast (Atlanta) division to Athens Paper.
Tenneco Packaging has announced the acquisition of Whitesell of Carolina, Inc.’s packaging assets, effective immediately.
Sentinel Polyolefins LLC, Hyannis, MA, acquired a large manufacturing facility in Glens Falls, NY and chose Plymouth, England as its first manufacturing operation base in Europe as part of the company’s five-year, $40 million global expansion plan.
Caraustar Industries, Inc. and Carolina Converting, Inc. have announced the completion of their merger agreement.  Carolina Converting began a wholly-owned subsidiary of Caraustar Industries.
Mead Corp. announced it has agreed to acquire the AT-A-GLANCE Group of Cullman Ventures, Inc. for a purchase price of approximately $550 million in cash.  Subject to approval, the acquisition is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 1999.
Peltz Group, an independent paper recycler, announced it has purchased Recycling Options Ltd. of Cleveland, OH.
Georgia-Pacific Corp. and Chesapeake Corp. have completed a previously announced agreement to create Georgia-Pacific Tissue, a joint venture in which the two companies have combined their away-from-home tissue businesses.
U.S. Foodservice has signed a definitive purchase agreement for the acquisition of Superior Products Mfg. Co. of Brighton, MN.
DECEMBER Tenneco Packaging has completed its spin-off from Tenneco Inc. and becomes Pactiv Corp., a specialty packaging company fully focused on the packaging industry.

Kewill Systems plc (provider of electronic commerce supply chain management solutions) announced an agreement with FDX Corp. to use Keywill technology to provide shipper systems tools and back-office integration capabilities.
