10:45 am - Noon   Best Practices:
Wisdom from Outside the Paper Industry
Presented by: Barry Lawrence, Ph.D., Professor
Texas A&M University
Disney Boardwalk Hotel

While each distribution channel is distinct, the problems are very similar. Since each channel approaches these problems from a different perspective, solutions are often found that are unique. Many of these solutions can be transferred to paper distribution if they are well understood. The Supply Chain Systems Laboratory at Texas A&M University conducts many Best Practice projects across multiple channels as part of their research efforts.

In this session, Dr. Barry Lawrence, Director of the Supply Chain Systems Laboratory, will share best practices from other channels that his group has identified through their research. Dr. Lawrence will demonstrate with case studies how these practices work, what problems they solve, and how they apply to the paper industry.

Noon - 1:30 pm   Conference Luncheon
Paper & Packaging Printing Technology Trends – Where are we headed?
Luncheon Speaker: George Ryan, Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer Printing Industries of America / Graphic Arts Technical Foundation
    Disney Boardwalk Hotel

Where is printing technology headed in five years for both paper and packaging? When you read about current trends in the trade magazines, it can be tough to know what technologies are here to stay, and what is just a passing fad. PIA/GATF constantly weeds through all the hype for you.

George Ryan will give an overview of current and new technologies that printers are facing with a fair, unbiased look at the industry from a national perspective. You will learn more about the future of new technologies such as: digital printing; long perfecting presses; UV/hybrid UV for increased productivity; implementation of stochastic screening; implementation of soft proofing; automated bindery equipment; closed-loop color control; workflow systems; ancillary systems – mailing fulfillment and digital asset management.

The Five Pillars of Financial Success in Distribution
Presented by: Albert Bates, Ph.D., President, Profit Planning Group
Director, NPTA Alliance Performance Analysis Report
    Disney Boardwalk Hotel

This session will discuss the factors that cause success or failure from both a strategic and operational perspective. It will suggest that successful firms in every industry demonstrate five key characteristics. You will learn from the best practices in other industries and how they may be applied to your business.

    1. Barriers to Entry: Competitive battles are not fought on every item on every transaction every single day. Instead, competition is waged between alternative business systems.

    2. De-Commoditization: The overall product assortment offered allows for both tonnage sales and reasonable margin opportunities from non-commodities.

    3. Employee Productivity: New procedures for controlling payroll expense have been implemented.

    4. Profit Focus: The maximization of dollar profits takes priority over the maximization of sales or the minimization of asset investment.

    5. Internal Profit Understanding: There is a clear understanding within the decision-making ranks of how profit is generated or destroyed by employee actions.

1:45 pm - 2:45 pm   Limited Outlet Distribution:
What is the Future of the Exclusive Franchise?
Presented by: Cheryl Van Deusen, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Strategic Management and International Business
    University of North Florida
    Disney Boardwalk Hotel

Within NPTA, many of both the traditional members and the non-traditional members have engaged to some degree in the Limited Outlet Distribution (LOD) model. The LOD can be defined simply as an exclusive/selective distribution model where manufacturers distribute their products through a limited number of outlets in a given geographic region. The LOD model is believed to be the predominate system employed for the distribution of printing paper. However, the current utilization of the LOD is thought to be much less common in the distribution of disposables, packaging and sanitary supplies.

The change in distribution patterns has been attributed to a variety of factors including the consolidation of both manufacturers and distributors; integrated supply, marketing, and buying groups; and the always accusable Internet-based sales transaction. This study conducts research with a sample of the NPTA Alliance members as well as non-members to determine the frequency in which LOD is employed as a distribution strategy. The level of satisfaction with the process for both the manufacturers and the distributors is also being analyzed. The results of the study are the focus of this presentation.

Integrated Brand Strategies for Coated Paper Markets:
The Role and Value of the Paper Merchant
Presented by: Jeffrey Hayes, Group Director, InfoTrends

Paper manufacturers and distributors constantly face the challenge of growing their share in a price-sensitive, highly competitive, mature market. InfoTrends recently completed a detailed study on the brand awareness and purchase behavior for coated cover grades. The study yielded several important insights about the role of print customers, commercial printers, paper merchants, and paper mills. Jeffrey Hayes will discuss how brand decisions are made for coated papers, what factors influence brand and supplier selection, and what mills and merchants can do to grow market share.
