Print Buyers & the Paper Industry

Who They Rely on, How They Source Paper, and Where They Get Their Information

Professionals who buy commercial printing - regardless of their corporate titles - also source paper. They specify the paper for their print jobs (either generically or quite explicitly), and some purchase the paper themselves. Yet despite this, as well as the fact that paper can represent as much as one-third of the cost of a print job, woefully little information exists about how print buyers source paper or work with the paper industry in general.


For the paper industry to reach, serve and influence print buyers, it needs to appreciate how these professionals handle their paper-sourcing responsibilities and where they get their paper information and education.


This survey, in conjunction with Margie Dana and J. Zarwan Partners, was conducted to obtain insights and answers to other key questions. The objective was to uncover trends and purchasing behaviors that shine a light on how professional print buyers work with the paper industry. 


This report provides important insight into this community of professional print customers. With this information, both the paper and printing industries will learn about how today's print buyer goes about specifying paper, as well as where they seek help and information about paper trends.
