NPTA Awards & Scholarships


NPTA members are at the forefront of the paper industry, serving as advocates for enhancing the industry.

NPTA values its members who actively support its mission, and thus, are recognized for their contributions through a variety of awards, including:

  • Stanley O. Styles Industry Excellence Award: NPTA’s highest honor, awarded to an individual who has had a distinguished career in the paper industry
  • Golden Eagle Award: Recognizes those individuals who have served the paper industry for 40 years or more

Stanley O. Styles Industry Excellence Award

NPTA’s highest honor is awarded to an individual who has had a distinguished career in the printing paper industry. Each year, the Stanley O. Styles Nominations Committee selects an industry leader who has made a positive impact through innovation and dedication, and whose character represents the ideals for which leaders all strive.

Nominations for the 2016 Stanley O. Styles Industry Excellence Award are now being accepted through October 1, 2015. All nominations are reviewed by the Stanley O. Styles Nominations Committee. Download the nominations form.

The criteria for the selection of award winners is as follows:

  • The recipient of the award shall be a paper merchant, paper manufacturer or paper converter, consultant, or educator who has had a distinguished career in the printing paper distribution channel.
  • The winner will be someone who has had a positive influence on the printing paper distribution channel. This may be from the introduction of new management methods, marketing concepts, or new products, which have become important in the industry.
  • The award recipient will be one who is acknowledged by the printing paper distribution channel as a leader and a good representative of the values and traits necessary for the excellent conduct of business.
  • The winner will be one who has been long involved in paper industry affairs through actions, and has supported the paper industry’s trade associations, foundations, and marketing groups of mills, converters, merchants, and others.
  • The award recipient will be someone who has been a spokesperson for the paper industry either locally and/or nationally, and whose opinion is respected.
  • The winner will be one who exhibits impeccable character and is regarded as a good citizen of the paper industry.

Golden Eagle Award

It is with great pleasure that the NPTA recognizes those individuals who have served the paper industry for 40 years or more. This award is an ongoing service of NPTA and is available to all members throughout the year. There is no time limit or deadline for this continuing program.

To receive an award, one is required to be a current employee of a member company and must submit a letter outlining his or her experience on the company's letterhead along with a completed Golden Eagle Award application.

The Program and its Purpose

The PAPER Foundation Scholarship Program was established to reward academic excellence and financially assist children and grandchildren of current employees of member companies of NPTA.

Administration of the Program

All phases of the scholarship competition, including selection of recipients and determination of awards to be made, are managed by the Center for Essential Management Services (CEMS), Greenlawn, NY. The decision made by CEMS to award recipients is final. Any falsified information will mean immediate disqualification.

Conditions of Eligibility

The applicant must be a child or grandchild of a current employee of a member company of the Paper And Plastics Education Research (PAPER) Foundation (all member companies of NPTA are automatically members of the PAPER Foundation). Member companies must be in good standing at the time scholarship application is made.

  1. The applicant must be in one of the following categories:
    a. Senior in high school planning to attend an accredited undergraduate college or university as a full-time student.
    b. Student currently enrolled full-time as a freshman, sophomore, or junior at an undergraduate accredited college or university.
    c. A current full-time employee of a NPTA member company who is also enrolled as a full-time student in undergraduate studies.

Application Procedure

  1. Applicants must meet the qualifications described here and in the selection criteria document.
  2. Applicant must complete the four-page application form:
    a. Complete and sign the application
    b. Secure a current and official transcript
    c. Secure a teacher recommendation
    d. Send the completed application, recommendation, and official transcript in the same envelope to CEMS
    e. Application must be post marked and only mailed applications to CEMS will be accepted:

The Selection Process

CEMS has total responsibility for selecting the award recipients on the basis of the student's academic record, participation in school activities, work experience, community service activities, financial need, unusual personal or family circumstances, and a teacher recommendation. CEMS receives the application and makes the selection of award recipients.

Scholarship Awards

Only one completed application is necessary to be considered for all awards an applicant qualifies for; all awards are made without regard to race, creed, color, sex, religion, or national origin. All awards are based on a combination of academic achievement and financial need.

Announcement and Distribution of Awards

Recipients of awards will be notified in late May. The awards will be made by CEMS on behalf of the PAPER Foundation. The award checks are payable jointly to the student and the institution that the recipient will be attending, and may be used to pay for tuition, books, lab fees, and/or other related educational expenses. The award checks will be mailed directly to the school during August.

The Responsibilities of the Student

Applicants to the PAPER Foundation Scholarship Program should remember that it is their responsibility to fulfill these requirements:

  1. Gather and submit the information necessary for CEMS to select you as a Scholarship recipient.
  2. Apply for admission to the colleges or universities of your choice (high school seniors).
  3. Meet the entrance requirements of the institutions you have chosen.
  4. Gain admission to the institution of your choice.
  5. If already a student at an accredited college or university, you must maintain good academic standing.


No obligation of any kind will be imposed upon award recipients, except to permit the PAPER Foundation or NPTA to announce the names of recipients of the awards and to publish their pictures with a brief bio. The PAPER Foundation assumes no further obligation in connection with the granting of the awards. However, the PAPER Foundation reserves the right to alter or discontinue the PAPER Foundation Scholarship Program at any time.


Questions regarding any aspect of the PAPER Foundation Scholarship Program should be addressed in writing to CEMS. Employees of the PAPER Foundation and NPTA cannot answer questions about the program beyond the information outlined in this document.
